Modern Home Decor: How to Decorate with Small Items

Recently, I saw the works of the designer Minushka. She has an incredible ironic, artsy and slightly folk style to her works. Though we can no longer buy items of her design, I was so inspired by her style, I thought about prints and decorative elements, art, texture.

The beauty lies within bright and subdued colors, bold and calm textures as well as extrovert and introverted people. I thought I would show you my favorite small things for modern home decor.

I suggest you change your home decor according to your mood, period in life and season. That’s why there should be a lot of items you can choose from. Even if you are a fan of one interior design style, try to stay open to everything new the world has to offer and you will find something cute for your home from an unexpected place.

Prints

The easiest and the most affordable way to freshen your interior is to change printed art in your frames or both. It is a trick to add color and details of the new style, to see how it will look like. Printed art perfectly cures the itch for something new, and it is an amazing way to support up-and-coming artists who sell their prints. These prints caught my eye, I might introduce one of them to my room.

Pillow Covers

These little guys can change the entire room’s look. It is easy to switch, change and mix and match them. Pillows can become a nice place to locate a pop of color and see whether it is in harmony with your place or not. I love pillow covers from natural materials that have some texture and something interesting, but sublime in it.

Vases

Vases are cool because they are functional and perfect for design. I’m all into complicated and challenging shapes or at least some texture. As soon as you are tired of one vase, you can hide it for now or relocate it to another space, where it can continue bringing you an aesthetic pleasure. I love to put vases with flowers into a composition. If I want to emphasize the beauty of flowers, I opt for neutral or glass vase.

Mugs

Mugs and cups can be showcased as a decorative item that is a finishing tough to a general vibe of the interior. Of course, they are functional and it is another level of pleasure to drink from your favorite mug. However, it is impossible to deny that mugs with coffee or something else are really photogenic. The mug I choose in the morning often reflects my mood: calm and composed or purposeful and sassy. Your drink ware and dinnerware often adds integrity to the modern home decor.

Rugs

A rug can be a unifying element between several spaces. It usually takes a lot of space visually, so most people tend to pick neutral rugs or the ones that have a worn-out feel. I choose rugs from natural fabric, either woven or wicker rugs to add texture to white space. The texture is extremely important when choosing a rug. If you are worried that your rug is rather extra, you can put something like a sofa or coffee table on it. When it comes to rugs, the bigger the print on it and the more it is supported by many colors, the harder it is to style them. Otherwise, your rug would only favor your overall interior.

Stools

This one little interior decor item is often neglected. Stools in the interior design are like cherries on the cake: they introduce a new color or support the entire tone of the space and often serve several functions like being a chair for kids, a side table for books, or coffee table near a sofa or chair. A wide variety of stools can refresh any room, my favorite is the one with a knitted top.

Wooden decor

This type of decor is often neglected, however, I want to take a good look at it. Due to subtle color and natural texture wood is a perfect addition to any minimalist home. Usually, it is one of a kind and handmade, making it a perfect modern home decor that grabs attention but remains delicate.

Trays

Following the theme of wooden decor, a nicely done wooden tray will not only make you happy on Sunday mornings when the best coffee is served on it, but will also be an amazing addition to any kitchen. It is also a great background for macro pictures. If you feel that your kitchen interior is too neat, you might want to add something naturally imperfect. The best way to balance it out is to put wooden trays, cutting boards of different shape and wooden utensils on display.

Coasters

Small thing that can become a beautiful base to serve your coffee or tea on. As well as wooden trays, coasters make a perfect background for pictures. You can change coasters whenever you want, depending on the drink ware.

Hope you liked my picks of the best small decorative items for modern home decor, feel free to add something you like.
